Greenback School Newsletter: Issue 3 10/1/10

As Fall rolls around, students, faculty, and even members of the town anxiously await the yearly events that take place in the school and town. Some of those events are the Fall Festival, Football Homecoming, Homecoming week activities, and the big game against Oneida. Every year, the most anticipated event for the town is the Greenback Fall Festival. Our very own Laurel Wright performed music she had written. The Niles Ferry’s Youth Drama Group, “Spoken For”, performed several silent dramas. Also, there were college majorettes that performed to “Rocky Top”, youth league cheerleaders, and gymnists from Gymnastic Counts. Although the festival had multiple activities to enjoy, the one event everyone was buzzing about was the first ever Reverse Homecoming. A boy was picked by each class to dress up as if they were really running for homecoming queen and they had to pick their “football escorts”. Freshman candidate was Donavon Folkner, escorted by eighth grader Nina Goodson, Sophomore candidate was Tanner Miller, escorted by Sophomore Katelyn Sparks, Junior Candidate was Hogan Goodson, escorted by Junior Meagan Spires, and the Senior candidate was Matt Patton, escorted by Junior Erin Russell. Attendance was high and helped the classes and clubs to raise money for their activities. When you walk into the school building and notice Spongebob & a Blue Brother walking around, you know its homecoming week at Greenback School. Last week, students and faculty were given the opportunity to participate in spirit week by dressing up in their class color or by dressing up Madonna style. The days were as follows: Monday- Class Color Day, Tuesday- Pajama Day, Wednesday- Decades Day, Thursday- Fictional Character Day, and Friday- Orange and Black Day. The crowning of the homecoming queen was the highlight of the entire week. Each class had candidates to run for the court, one for freshman, sophomores, and juniors, and this year, five for seniors. Freshman candidate was Megan Floyd, escorted by Junior, Skyler Tallent; Sophomore candidate was Allison McClanahan, escorted by Senior, Ryan Shelton; Junior candidate was Jessie Mullins, escorted by Jeff Harris; and Senior Candidates were Macy Clower, escorted by Colton Strout; Ellery Budan, escorted by Senior, Jeremy Miller; Rebecca Dixon, escorted by Senior, Daniel McCloud; Samantha McCollum, escorted by Senior, Rhyne Johnston; and Kasie Range, escorted by Junior, Hogan Goodson. This year’s homecoming queen was Ms. Rebecca Dixon. Although Greenback’s winning streak had ended with losses to Sweetwater and Harriman, the Cherokees made sure they would end their losing streak with a sweet victory over Oneida. Previous years, Oneida has always been a threat to Greenback; it always had and always will be a rivalry with the Indians. After six years losing to the Indians, Greenback pulled out a win with a low score of 17-7. Greenback travels to Midway tonight to hopefully pull out a needed District win.

As the school year progresses into the month of September, students and faculty finally get into the rhythm of things. Between rushing to Mrs. Hawkins room to pick up food for the food drive, to supporting the soccer team as they keep on going strong, to cheering on the Greenback football team as they move through the season 3-0. There is no doubt that Greenback is already on a roll!

The best part about helping the community is having the chance to give back to the  people of this community. The high school Beta Club did just that this past month by hosting a food drive that lasted from August 31st-September 3rd. This food drive allowed students K-12 to bring in food items and donate them for the community food pantry. The class who brought in the most food items would win an ice cream party. Overall, students brought in a total of over 800 food items with Mrs. Hendricks's 3rd grade class wining by bringing in over 400 items. Mrs. Clinton's 3rd grade class and Mrs. Marsh's 6th grade class also had generous donations as well.   English teacher and Beta Club sponsor, Mrs. Hawkins, was very pleased with the outcome of the drive. "I was overwhelmed with their generosity and students' willingness to help others in need."

Soccer is one of the sports at Greenback you know you cannot take lightly. The girls of the Greenback Soccer team prove just that every time they step onto the playing field. This year's 2010-2011 team is coached by Jessica Spafford, with assistant coach Delynn Edmonds. Seniors Macy Clower and Ellery Budan are the captains of this young team of 17. When asked about the team, Macy quoted saying, "We are a young team, but at the same time, we are improving every game. Also, the girls are extremely attentive in listening to Elle and I and also the coaches. It is good that they trust us and respect us enough to listen." Elle added, “It is important that we all work as a team.” Despite the fact that they have no victories on record so far this season, the young team has not lost their enthusiasm for the game. They continue to play hard making great strides each game.  The team hosted ScottCounty last night and travel to Harriman next Tuesday.

Early predictions for this year’s football team gave the notion that it was going to be rocky for the 2010 Kees. Proving everyone wrong was on the minds of each player as they took to the field each Friday night to go 3and 0. This past Friday, Greenback hosted the Rockwood Tigers at home. There was such a buzz going around that week, saying that if Greenback beat Rockwood, they could pretty much take every team they played. Greenback wasted no time in pulling out a 17-10 win over the Tigers. Greenback travels tonight to Sweetwater, once again trying to keep the Cherokee pride going strong and free of loss.

The 2010-11 school year for Greenback School has already begun on a high  note. From welcoming new faculty members & students, outstanding test scores, and opening up the football season with a win, it looks like another great year for Greenback.
It’s always interesting on your first day back, to see how many new students & teachers there are. This year, the school welcomed 5 new faculty members to its staff &45 new students. In fact, our new Agriculture Teacher, Ms. Mary Ellen Pautler, came from New York. As many have asked, “How did you get to Greenback?” Mrs. Pautler’s reply, “I attended The University of Tennessee and fell in love with East Tennessee. I wanted to stay here.”
This past year’s test scores were outstanding. Mr. Breedlove told the faculty and students, “I’m extremely proud of our high school scores. We achieved a 100% graduation rate and 100% on the state exam. Our high math scores were also comparable to last year’s scores in which we placed 2nd in the state. We’re unsure about how the elementary & middle school scores will go. Even though we made the AYP, it’ll be tough raising the scores because of how high the state standards have been raised. I’m confident we’ll make it.”
As you feel like the first two weeks could not go by any slower, you can be sure that the first Friday night football game came just in time. The Kees opened the season by hosting Meigs County last Friday night at home. Within the first two minutes of the game, Greenback had already put 7 points on the board. During the third quarter, due to weather precautions, the game was stalled about forty minutes. However, that did not stop the Kees from pulling out a 35-12 win over the Tigers. Greenback will be traveling to Pigeon Forge this Friday, hopefully returning home with another victory.
